‘De Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie’ has recently been given the status of ‘UNESCO World Heritage’. As a beautiful fortified city, Gorinchem is part of this defense line.
History
‘De Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie’ is an important line of defense in Dutch history. The waterlinie protected much of Holland by flooding tracts of land for enemies from the east. From the many forts along the line, Dutch soldiers were able to fire on the opponents. The line is 85 kilometers long and has no fewer than 45 fortresses, six fortresses and two castles.
